The realization of this trilingual (English, French, German) conference based on the ERC Advanced Grant that the European Research Council gave 2010 to Prof. Dr. Dr. Andreas Tacke (Trier University). The grant is part of the ERC-project “Redefining Boundaries: Artistic training by the guilds in Central Europe up to the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire” which operates under the name “artifex”.

At artifex, we have tackled the subject matter of ›court artists‹ in a twofold manner: The Paris conference offered a European perspective, while a conference with the title „Hofkünstler und Hofhandwerker in deutschsprachigen Residenzstädten des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts – Personen, Konflikte, Strukturen“ held in Mainz in 2015 focused its geographical scope on the German speaking regions of the Holy Roman Empire.
