Edition of the Guild Regulations for Painters up to 1800: Sources on the Social History of the Artist from the Archives of Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Das historisch-kritische Editionsprojekt gehört zur geisteswissenschaftlichen Grundlagenforschung und will erstmals die deutschsprachigen Zunft- bzw. Handwerksordnungen für Künstler (Maler) publizieren und damit nichts geringeres versuchen, als einen Perspektivwechsel in der Kunstwissenschaft einleiten zu helfen, da diese die soziale Lebenswirklichkeit des Künstlers als Zunftmitglied weitgehend ausblendet.

This source-supported project examines the reality of the social position of artists tied to guilds in the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era. Up to now, the training regulations and the options open to painters have not yet been investigated in art history on a broad base of sources. Thus the intention is to change the paradigms of writing biographies of artists.
