The Trier Round-Table brought together five key researchers from the University of Antwerp and five members of the TAK/ SHARC research team. It was set up to identify shared areas of interest and to determine potential fields of cooperation. The following topics were debated in short presentations and informal discussions: the social history of (painters) guilds, the function of brotherhoods and the religious life of the guilds, material culture within the realms of the city, the role of court culture versus civic culture, the nature of guild regulations, the significance of materials as commodities of the artists’ trade, etc. The research projects of the Antwerp Centre for Urban History and the Trier DFG-project Zunftordnungen under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. Tacke proved to be of mutual interest. Particular consideration was given to the training of apprentices and journeymen in late mediaeval and early modern guilds. The possibility of undertaking comparative studies of the guild systems in the Southern and Northern Netherlands and in the Holy Roman Empire was addressed. This brainstorming session fulfilled the purpose of making first contact with the Antwerp team. It will be followed up by a meeting in Antwerp (2013) in view of future co-operations and conference projects. Colleagues from other parts of Belgium and Holland will be invited.
